On Monday 1st of August, APOW and FICA London took over the Dome and ran an introductory Capoeira Angola workshop for an hour of intense fun! We learnt the basics of this dance, martial arts, and played music. Capoeira has its roots in Bantu traditions, carried to Brazil by enslaved Africans, and developed into the dance-fight that is practised today all around the world.
We finished with a ‘Roda’ (or the ‘circle’), where young people challenged the experienced Capoirista “Dija” to a round of Capoeira. Capoeira players can develop self-esteem, communication and expression skills to create a harmony between the body and the mind and for this reason, it is an art regularly practiced within APOW activities
