Holiday to Woolwich! Watching a play with interesting reflections on the way home

We went on a trip to watch Night Light by the Mandala Theatre Company at the Young People’s Theatre in Woolwich last Thursday.

The APOW crew went to watch Night Light by the Mandala Theatre Company at the Young People’s Theatre in Woolwich last Thursday. We all enjoyed the play, but we did have some criticisms and it brought up a lot of questions and discussions for the train journey home. The play told the stories of two young refugees battling the system and their attempt to run away. The acting was superb! We all believed that the story was a bit too negative, stereotypical and did not demonstrate any positive qualities of the young people, quite different from our APOW philosophy.

At the train platform we came across a friendly platform attendant who asked us if we were on holiday. “Yes!”, we replied, “on holiday from Croydon to Woolwich!” We began a discussion where we all shared what we liked and disliked about the play, and this quickly turned into an interesting debate about trust, social workers and the system. Everyone had interesting ideas and reflections and it was a great learning experience for all of us!
