We have been working with the Horniman Museum and Pan Intercultural Arts to work on an exhibition that will open at the Horniman Museum in 2018- the theme is about Travel across the Mediterranean! Here is an account of what we have been doing, by Sabrin!

In April, we met to go to North Greenwich to the secret storage space for the Horniman Museum. This is where they keep all their items, that have not been displayed yet in the museum. It was huge! The lady who showed around said that there are millions of pieces in that storage space! We saw mummies, and big ornamental vase and statues, from thousands of years ago. It was a really nice experience to see all these incredible things. It was so interesting because every item has a story. We felt so special to be some of the only people to see them.

We had a workshop together with Pan Intercultural Arts and the youth group at Horniman Museum. It was about a piece of boat that has come all the way from Italy. The boat has been used for many different journeys, most recently to carry refugees across the Mediterranean. We saw the boat and we talked about what it looked like, we imagined all the journeys it could have taken, and wrote our own stories about these journeys.

We met again in July, at the Horniman Museum. We looked at a map of Europe and tried to guess all the countries that have borders on the Mediterranean sea. We talked about the history of travelling around Europe, and what it used to look like years ago. It used to be used for trade routes. Did you know that there are 21 countries that surround the Mediterranean sea? We learnt about how traders hundreds of years ago used to all share a language that was common to people from many different countries. This made trading easier because then people from Portugal could understand people from Italy, and people from Turkey could understand people from Libya, and so on!

We wrote poems together and we look forward to sharing our exhibition at Horniman Museum with you in 2018!
